Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Bantova
The Secret Eagle’s Nest of Meteora

The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Bantova is one of Meteora’s best-kept secrets – the ideal spot for those seeking tranquility and a sense of adventure far from the usual tourist routes. Nestled inside a cave, literally clinging to the rock in a quiet gorge between Kastraki and Kalabaka, Bantova feels more like a hidden “eagle’s nest” than a typical monastery.

Its history begins in the 14th century, when hermits first sought refuge on the Meteora rocks. The small church of Saint Nicholas, carved into the natural cave, still preserves 19th-century frescoes, while modern iconography has been added in recent years. Over time, both monks and the first known nun of Meteora, Eugenia, called Bantova home – she helped restore the site at the end of the 19th century.

Bantova endured difficult times: it was bombed during World War II and remained in ruins for decades. Thanks to the care of the monks from Holy Trinity Monastery, today it has been fully restored and offers a unique destination for those who want to experience a different side of Meteora.

The ascent to Bantova is possible only via a footpath – no tourist facilities, no tickets, no crowds. When you arrive, you’ll discover the tiny cave-chapel, wooden balconies, ascetic monks’ cells, and, of course, the breathtaking view over Kastraki and the “stone forest” of Meteora. Here you’ll truly feel what life was like for the first hermits: strict, simple, full of faith and ingenuity.

Bantova does not function as an active monastery, but every year on May 20th, it comes alive for the feast of Saint Nicholas, with a humble liturgy in the little chapel. The rest of the time, it offers visitors a chance for quiet exploration, reflection, and genuine moments away from the crowds.

If you want to discover a corner of Meteora that few know about – to lose yourself in the silence and get a taste of the hermits’ world – the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Bantova is the perfect choice!
