Live the Unique Tradition of
Saint George “Mandilas”
Just outside the village of Kastraki, perched about 40 meters high in a rock cavity, lies a small chapel dedicated to Saint George. Built inside a cave on the northern side of one of Meteora’s cliffs, this hidden hermitage is at the heart of one of the most authentic and unique traditions of the area.
The name “Mandilas” comes from the colorful headscarves – known as “mandiles” – that are offered to the Saint each year. The story goes back to the 17th century, when a local Muslim landowner was seriously injured by a falling tree near the chapel. His wife, desperate to save him, followed the advice of nearby Christian villagers and prayed to Saint George, offering her most valuable possession – her headscarf. Miraculously, her husband recovered fully.
Since then, every year on April 23, the Feast Day of Saint George, young locals climb the cliff using only ropes to hang vibrant scarves at the entrance of the cave. Without safety equipment, but with deep faith and excitement, they honor the Saint and ask for health and good fortune.
The sight of colorful mandiles fluttering against the raw stone, high above ground, is breathtaking. But this is not a tourist performance—it’s a living ritual, passed down through generations, a bold and heartfelt expression of faith and community.
If you’re seeking a true glimpse into the soul of Meteora, this is an experience you won’t forget.
