The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, also known as the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, is the oldest and largest monastery in Meteora. Dramatically perched atop the highest rock, it stands as a true landmark that every traveler should experience up close.
Its story begins in the 14th century, when Saint Athanasios the Meteorite founded the first organized monastery in Meteora. Later, Joasaph—a young king who renounced his throne to dedicate his life to faith—continued his work, transforming the original church into the imposing monument that still stands today. Both men are honored as saints on April 20th.
Within the monastery, you’ll discover rare frescoes of the Macedonian school—artworks that impress even the most discerning visitor. The chapels, the main church (katholikon), and the simple yet atmospheric halls reflect centuries of unbroken monastic life. The monastery’s museum houses authentic relics and hidden stories, while the sacristy with the skulls of former monks offers a unique and moving experience that stays with you long after your visit.
Great Meteoron is not just a historical monument; it’s an experience. Here, time seems to stop, the panoramic views take your breath away, and the energy of the place is truly captivating. A visit to this monastery is a journey to the heart of Meteora—a piece of Greece that remains unforgettable to every traveler.
