Perched in a cave high on the rock, just a short walk from Kastraki, it offers an experience of tranquility, history, and unique beauty. Its location feels straight out of a fairytale \u2013 <strong>70 meters<\/strong> above ground inside the cliff, with the footpath and steps preparing you for a real journey back in time.<\/p><p>The story of the monastery begins in the 14th century, when <strong>Saint Neilos<\/strong>, the first leader of the hermit community of Meteora, founded Ypapanti and personally painted its small church. Despite the challenges and changes over the centuries, Ypapanti survived, enduring destruction but also enjoying glorious renovations in the 18th and 20th centuries. After World War II, the buildings were restored and today the monastery is preserved as a dependency of the Great Meteoron Monastery.<\/p><p><strong>The Monastery no longer operates as an active monastic community and has no permanent monks. It opens to the public mainly on its feast day (February 2nd) or during special occasions.<\/strong><\/p><p>The architecture of Ypapanti is striking: everything is built into the rock itself, with the small church preserving <strong>14th-century frescoes<\/strong>. In the narthex and the surrounding cells, you can sense the atmosphere of the first hermits.
