in a rock cavity, lies a small chapel dedicated to <strong>Saint George<\/strong>. Built inside a cave on the northern side of one of Meteora\u2019s cliffs, this <strong>hidden hermitage<\/strong> is at the heart of one of the most <strong>authentic and unique traditions<\/strong> of the area.<\/p><p>The name \u201c<strong>Mandilas<\/strong>\u201d comes from the colorful headscarves \u2013 known as \u201cmandiles\u201d \u2013 that are <strong>offered to the Saint<\/strong> each year. The story goes back to the <strong>17th century<\/strong>, when a local Muslim landowner was seriously injured by a falling tree near the chapel. His wife, desperate to save him, followed the advice of nearby Christian villagers and <strong>prayed to Saint George<\/strong>, offering her most valuable possession \u2013 her headscarf. Miraculously, her husband recovered fully.<\/p><p>Since then, every year on <strong>April 23<\/strong>, the Feast Day of Saint George, <strong>young locals climb<\/strong> the cliff using only ropes to hang vibrant scarves at the entrance of the cave. Without safety equipment, but with <strong>deep faith<\/strong> and excitement, they honor the Saint and ask for <strong>health and good fortune<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The sight of <strong>colorful mandiles fluttering<\/strong> against the raw stone, high above ground, is breathtaking.
